Below is a short interview with the upcoming underground artist PrettybLack.
How did you decide to become an artist?
PrettybLack: I decided I wanted to be involved with music at a very young age. At the age of 8 years, I was in love with R&B, so I would write and sing songs to my own made up beats. Back then all you needed was a radio and a cassette player and you could record yourself at home lol. At that time I would incorporate a little rap here and there. 90s R&B was a huge influence on my decision to want to be an artist. It was more prominent back. Even to the point where hip hop/rap artists would have to feature on R&B records for promo, etc, however, today the roles have reversed. As I got older, I realized I had a thing for writing, whether poems or songs but, i no longer wanted to sing and that's what birthed PrettybLack ..the femcee.
The best advice given to me as an artist would have to be " Give the your audience what they want but not at the expense of altering your creativity".
What about concerts? Do you play live?
Yes, I do perform live and give "mini" showcases. My next goal to accomplish is to perform in front of a bigger audience. For my area, I want to perform at the Shaggfest which is great for indie artists in my area. It can definitely help with more exposure opportunities.
Best punchline you ever wrote?
"Understand..Comprende..Kapeesh? Im going Ludacris ..Im Disturbing the Peace/ Been on my Beauty shit but they brought out the Beast/ Evicting rap hoes like they not on the Lease"
What are you currently working on? Did you release something in the past?
I am currently working on my Freshman album titled "Uninvited Guest". It will have a very small amount of feature because i want to showcase "my" art first and foremost…especially when this will be my first official project. In the past, I released a mixtape called "The Girl Next Door". That was merely a test run to see how a compilation of my music would sound…in my own ears. my album is still being worked on and should be released late Spring…early Summer.
Last but not least: Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I would sign a record contract with a major label but with stipulations. The terms would have to fit with my objectives. I would have to keep total creative control and I also would need to own my masters. The pros of signing with a major label would be more exposure linked to promo and marketing & a solid financial backing. It would also open the door to major networking opportunities. The cons could be, they could take away your voice or try and convince you to water down your art. It also could be a con due to the fact if you aren't moving the units like they would like… you could be "shelved" and end up being in debt with the label. I would rather stay Independent though, and if the opportunity came for a distribution or single deal…I would hop all over it lol.
Any last words?
Of course I would like to give a huge shoutout to all my supporters ! I cant get far without them. I also will like to give a big shoutout to my city Portsmouth (PTown), the whole 757 area and my state ..VA–Virginia..we up next !
