Featured artist: Phansy - 18 Yr. Old Conscious MC Pushing the Lyrical Envelope
Below is a short interview with the upcoming underground artist Phansy.
How did you decide to become an artist?
Phansy: Since I was young, I've aspired to make an impact in the world and to be an artist (though I wasn't sure under what context). With my poetic and artistic talents in hand, I'm achieving my ambitions through the expressive, avant-garde art form of emceeing.
Stay true to your own vision, regardless of the status quo.
What about concerts? Do you play live?
I haven't had many opportunities to do shows, but I certainly hope and plan to in the future!
Best punchline you ever wrote?
Only when you look into you can a mind be tuned.
What are you currently working on? Did you release something in the past?
I have released two albums. On my debut album, P.U.P.P.E.T., I was pleased with my song concepts, however I was still finding my vocal style. As I refined my writing process further and became more confident with my delivery, I created my second album 1 Pant at a Time, which was released on 11/11/2016. I'm not sure when my next album will drop, but I have no shortage of ideas/concepts and am always writing.
Last but not least: Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
On the upside, a major label would help me gain exposure, distribute my music through the proper channels, and enable me to do music full time. However, major labels control musical/lyrical content; thereby, musicians of major labels become less like authentic artists and more like lucrative puppets. Personally, I won't allow any person, entity, corporation, etc. to control my lyrics.
An important question for emcees to consider is: Are you in this for the art or are you in this for fame?
Any last words?
Thanks to everyone who was involved in, or aided the creation of my first and second albums… Nizuk, Purgatory of Souls, Vyda, Kolaps, Elect Insanity, Andrew Brown, and Steve Philips of Full Fidelity Studio in SLC, UT. Also thanks to everyone who listens and/or supports my music, wouldn't be possible without you!
