Featured artist: Divo - Toronto artist, Divo preps for new album release
Below is a short interview with the upcoming underground artist Divo.
How did you decide to become an artist?
Divo: I’ve always been a creative person ever since I was a kid. I have a natural drawing ability but as a teenager I began to be heavily influenced by hip hop music. I started writing verses and working with a producer. Eventually that lead to recording music and now I’m about to release my 4th album. I’d say I practice being the epitome of being an artist. Apart from making music I’m also a graphic designer, photographer and video director.
The money is not in the music but in the elements that surround it
What about concerts? Do you play live?
I play live on occasion so when I do it’s something special. Lately I’ve been focusing more on online marketing and promotion to gain broader exposure.
Best punchline you ever wrote?
There’s not medicine like revenge whey they wanna curse your name, I’m a rock till Nirvana come, Kurt Cobain
What are you currently working on? Did you release something in the past?
I just wrapped up my latest album called ”Transatlantic Soul” which I’m really excited about. It’s got that true hip hop sound that’s been missing in the industry for a while. The entire album is based on Motown record samples mixed with introspective and witty lyrics. It’s very unique.
Last but not least: Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I’d sign a distribution deal and let them take care of marketing my music. As an independent artist you learn to take on many of the tasks related to managing your music and a lot of the jobs can be outsourced. You just have to be a good manager to get things done. Obviously you want to keep as much of the profits yourself since most of the time the artist is the last one to get paid.
Any last words?
Shoutout to my people that have been helping me put this album together. My producer GMJ, engineer Dot, and all the artists that I’ve collaborated with.
Where can we contact you?
Divo: Connect with me on twitter @DivoHipHop
Thank you for your time. We wish you and your career the success it deserves.
