Below is a short interview with the upcoming underground artist David Frederick.
How did you decide to become an artist?
David Frederick: As a young kid in elementary school I wanted to sing professionally. At 17 years old I started freestyling with friends and ended up recording a few very low quality songs on my phone. I have always loved listening to hip-hop music, but at that given point I fell in love with making it.
”Sometimes you have to put yourself in an uncomfortable position to reach a comfortable one” – Emilijo Rojas
What about concerts? Do you play live?
I am always playing shows in and out of state. Over the summer I was on the ”Endangered Species Tour” with featuring Rukapuff.
Best punchline you ever wrote?
I’ve been eating rappers just to satisfy my appetite, I’m kicking it with savages but b**** we live that Lavish Life
What are you currently working on? Did you release something in the past?
My upcoming mixtape is set for release in December 2014. My singles ”Party All Night” ”Too Ill” & ”Lurking Ft. iMagic” have made the Inie Top 100 charts.
Last but not least: Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I would only sign a record contract with a majr very specific circumstances. Labels give a great platform for artists to make money and gain exposure for their music. However, most record contracts will take your publishing rights away from your own music, making it illegal to sell your own music if the label says otherwise. They also are known for 360 deals that take the majority of the artist’s earnings and give it to the label. The independent market is the way to go, you just have to be willing to put extra work in to succeed.
Any last words?
Shout out to my people in Aurora, Colorado!!! Particularly my labelmates from Weird Musik: Young F.A.I.T., Taylor Made, Lowdy Trail, Danlocz, and Young Z. I’d also like to give a shout out to Kashton, Tii-Be, Grapesoda Henderson, and iMagic. They are all super-dope artists and I look forward to continue to work with them.
