Featured artist: Nikolai Egel - The dark side of Geekdom.
Below is a short interview with the upcoming underground artist Nikolai Egel.
How did you decide to become an artist?
Nikolai Egel: I grew up probably what you would call a geek, although the term has lost some of it’s gravitas over the last few years. My family were primarily listening to rock, as where I come from hip-hop was viewed as not being ”real” music. When I was about 17 my social life grew, and my world opened up when every party i’d go to would have these three CDs in common – Dr. Dre’s ’2001’, Eminem’s ’Marshall Mathers LP’ (Until ’The Eminem Show’ came out, then that as well), and Xzibit’s ’Restless’. I heard them, and fell in love. It wasn’t long after that when ’8 Mile’ came out in cinemas, and I was inspired.
I was once told ”Never wear another artist’s t-shirt during your own live shows. Why give them free promotion? You’re there to promote you.”
What about concerts? Do you play live?
I’ll play live any time. I love the feeling of seeing the crowd get into your music. People can say that they like your work, but when you play live, you get to see how real those words actually are.
Best punchline you ever wrote?
I’m sorry, I was just your oddity, but/ Betty White & Lebron couldn’t get this ’Hot In Cleveland’/ So don’t tell me to cool down, when you’ve got my collar heated/ Cause i’m a man, i’m complicated, like sex with quadriplegics
What are you currently working on? Did you release something in the past?
I released a mixtape ”Rebel Without A Chance” in 2009, and an EP ”Call Me The Comedian” in 2011. I’m currently working on a new full-length project which should drop in a couple of months.
Last but not least: Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Absolutely. It’s my dream and my passion to make music and if a label is able to help more people hear it, then i’d be absolutely wrapped to be with the right label.
Any last words?
I wanna shout out to my best friends, Jimmy Sullivan aka State of Confuzun – We’re the best two in Nashville, hands down. My great mate and producer Charlie Tweaks, he keeps my tracks fresh & clean, and makes me sound fantastic. To the guys back home in Australia, Sam Paul & Dedli Cii who have had my back from day 1.
