Featured artist: Konsept The Genius - Smarter Than Your Average
Below is a short interview with the upcoming underground artist Konsept The Genius.
How did you decide to become an artist?
Konsept The Genius: My friend actually got me into rapping. He would record these funny freestyles that made me laugh but were full of dope lyrics. He was like, ”You should do it too man.” So I did. We recorded these funny songs and skits. He was way funnier than I was though. He kept with the comedy and I decided to get a bit more serious. I wrote my first song when I was sixteen. It was about a girl that broke up with me. I let my friend and a few others listen to it. They were impressed, and so was I. After that it was a rap.
Don’t change to please the masses, being different is a good thing.
What about concerts? Do you play live?
Although I haven’t done a show in a while I do give concerts. I’ve been working on a project for some months now so that’s been my focus.
Best punchline you ever wrote?
Holy Toledo I’m sharper than tuxedos/ go harder than all my heroes that’s ammo, for my ego
What are you currently working on? Did you release something in the past?
Currently I’m working on an EP I’ll release for free called ”NerDiKon.” I’ve dropped a few singles from the project but I’ve still got work to do on it. I’ve released numerous projects in the past. ”NerDiKon” would mark my 12th mixtape and 2nd EP, since this project is kinda both.
Last but not least: Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I could see myself signing a record contract with a major label. Signing a major deal would definitely help me network and meet some cool and very important people. You just get more access to stuff with a label. More opportunities, bigger shows, better equipment, the major labels make sure you have what you need to make them money. One of the biggest things holding me back from that is being trapped in a label deal. I’d like the freedom to decide my own terms for what and when I release my music. A lot of artists give up creative control just to get more money. We’ve all seen it. Some artists are forced to make music they don’t want to make. I don’t want to be in that position.
Any last words?
Yeah I’d like to give a shoutout to the DMV (DC, Maryland, and Virginia) and the Double-O (Ohio), both of which I consider home. Shoutout to Phunkytown, the producer duo who I’ve worked with for years. Much love to my family and friends who constantly supported me on my journey. And a HUGE shoutout to my fans! Without y’all I’m nothing. Thanks for taking the time to listen and spread my message.
