Featured artist: Jay Knowledge - Freshman Phenom
Below is a short interview with the upcoming underground artist Jay Knowledge.
How did you decide to become an artist?
Jay Knowledge: I started writing poetry around 12 years old and I've always freestyled for fun with the homies. I strayed away to focus more on football. When that dream died I needed something to pour myself into so I started writing again.
Know your music. Memorizing verses definitely improved my flow and conveying more emotion in my verses.
What about concerts? Do you play live?
Not yet but I'm ready and willing. I dabble in open mic and rap on the spot any and everywhere for whoever asks.
Best punchline you ever wrote?
Punchline rappers… LOL
What are you currently working on? Did you release something in the past?
Now I'm developing full 4 minute tracks over beats and networking with other artist to find a fitting creative environment to start putting out studio quality work. I've only released quick verses and spoken words on SoundCloud mostly for the purpose of tracking my development.
Last but not least: Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
That's tough. I'd love independent success without having to compromise my art for a dollar sign. I hate being micromanaged and I don't want too much outside influence on the development of my sound. Authenticity is everything to me.
Any last words?
S/O Mac G aka Dereus Tinsley. He inspired me to take rap serious. Dope indie producer, look him up. I'm from East Urbana IL and my entire family is from Chicago, where I currently reside. Huge S/O the cities that made me. And I gotta S/O all of Cali for the years I spent there after high school. I found myself there.
