Featured artist: Soap - If you don’t get these lines, you need to get smarter.
Below is a short interview with the upcoming underground artist Soap.
How did you decide to become an artist?
Soap: I was always a rocker with long hair and love for Led Zeppelin and Nirvana, around 5th grade I was hanging around my dad and he was playing cassettes from 2pac and The Fugees. (Yes I said cassettes) When I listened to these lyrics, it pushed me to want to write like that. So i did, i was 12 years old writing as many raps as i could. And then after I tried rapping out loud one day, I was hooked. Learned how to use some literary devices, learned what flow was, and now 7 years of writing has really shown me what my passion in life is. Music.
There’s someone who hates Elvis so don’t get offended when someone hates you.
What about concerts? Do you play live?
I play mediocre shows and I also rap battle in the AHAT Utah league.
Best punchline you ever wrote?
My lines are nicer than good girls and harder to get than they act.
What are you currently working on? Did you release something in the past?
I’ve released numerous songs but now I’m buckling down and trying to put together my first mixtape.
Last but not least: Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes I would. It’s suppose to be your ”Foot in the Door” opportunity in HipHop. But I’d be worried about imaging and trying to change my message/vision. I feel like the whole world is trying to appeal through vanity so what’s the difference in a record label? Bottom line, the music needs to be more important than the artist.
Any last words?
I just wanna give a shout out to my dad for believing in my talent and truly supporting me as an upcoming artist. I also wanna thank Utah itself for giving me such hard competition in my own state that it has forced me to step my game into a whole new category. If you wanna be number one, you gotta make work your number one priority.
