Indecent Philosophy

Featured artist: Philosopheyez - Indecent Philosophy

Below is a short interview with the upcoming underground artist Philosopheyez.

How did you decide to become an artist?

Philosopheyez: Well, I used to be a poet when I was younger and I took a whole lot of acid, like, waaaaayyy too much acid. Anyways, long story short, I was squatting in newcastle, eating sydney til the cows came home and rapidly losing my mind. I was always writing poems and riffs on guitars and stuff and then one of my friends introduced me to someone who would end up being a massive inspiration in guiding me into hip-hop. Before I met Ezra, I was just a poet. A horribly trippy, typical ”Wow, look at the curtains” hippy type who talked about god and the nature of relationships in his poetry. I’d never really thought about doing it to music before.. I had a gig at the Holy biscuit when I was 18/19 or something as ”Just Norman” and it all kinda went from there. I did a mostly SLAM/Spoken word set alongside Apples and Snakes and then one song at the end. It was exhilarating! I wanted more, the music had taken me in. The rest is history.. I called myself ”Philosopheyez” because I want to convey a message, not any message in particular but to suggest certain philosophical views in the music. I want people to think more, to think deeper and sometimes, not to think at all. People seem to have gotten bogged down and bitter about life, I wanna try to bring peace to people. Whether or not I will achieve that however, is another matter.. Regardless of the outcome, I’m doing what I do because I love doing it. If I get to touch a few people in the mean time then I’m happy.

Brother Ali once said ”Only put out what you truly feel and if a couple months down the line, you don’t still love it, don’t release it. Sometimes you progress so fast that in a year, or even a few months, you could hate the first song you made whilst making an album. Sit on the tracks, be patient, your time will come.” (Paraphrasing)

What about concerts? Do you play live?

Yeah, I love playing live, I haven’t played live for a while because I’ve been away travelling and working on my album etc. But performing is as much a passion to me as the music.

Best punchline you ever wrote?

What do you call a blind buck? I have no eyed deer.

What are you currently working on? Did you release something in the past?

I’ve just started a record label called DTS Records, due to launch at the end of April. It’s all very mysterious at the moment but we have some AWESOME releases coming soon with beat clashes from Jabbathakut and Tobiwan, Raw crazy sounds from The Muzza and much much more. I’m currently in the process of recording and writing my solo album called ”Indecent Philosophy” coming out very soon. There’s an EP coming from it with a few videos towards the end of the summer so watch this space! I have never actually released anything yet. Not properly anyway.. I have always taken Brother Ali’s advice but there are lots of Instrumental dubs on my soundcloud if you wanna little taster.. Follow Deep Thinkers and Philosopheyez on Facebook and Soundcloud to make sure you don’t miss the releases!

Last but not least: Would you sign a record contract with a major label?

I’m not really sure to be honest, I’m doing things on my own at the minute, I want to sign a few artists myself but I would consider partnership as long as I remained in control. I guess it would have to be the right deal. My music isn’t very mainstream though so I don’t think we’re in any real danger of that happening.

Any last words?

Shout outs to DTS Records, Polar Productions, Red Team, all the Deep Thinkers Mandem, The Fnords, Indecence, Trinity Lo-Fi and of course, my wonderful family. I’m hailing from muggy Hebburn in South Tyneside but there’s not much there to represent nowadays since they moved everyone out. Moving to Bristol in May so Bristol heads beware! Philosopheyez is coming to stay!
