Featured artist: Jay Damon - Australian Underground Rapper Jay Damon Makes Big Moves For 2015 With Support From Some Big Names
Below is a short interview with the upcoming underground artist Jay Damon.
How did you decide to become an artist?
Jay Damon: It wasn’t so much of a decision, it’s just who I am as a person. I started writing and expressing myself through my music when I was 13 and I was kicked out of school when my teachers found my books were filled with lyrics. Since then it’s just been a big part of my life that has grown and grown over the years.
Making music is either in you or it’s not. If it is than you will do it regardless of the success that it does or doesn’t bring.
What about concerts? Do you play live?
Man, I get nervous as hell before I get on stage, but once I’m up there I love it. No musician is complete without performing. It’s half the reason I do what I do. There’s no better feeling to me than seeing a crowd enjoying your music.
Best punchline you ever wrote?
You’re fake crumbs and I eat snares and base drums so it’s safe to say even the beats scared.
What are you currently working on? Did you release something in the past?
I’m currently working on my second attempt at a full album. The project is called Art of War and features some huge names and will be career defining for me. I have features from Apathy, Diabolic, Block McCloud and a track with one of my personal idols Slaine which is produced by none other than DJ Lethal. Not to mention some incredible Australian artists too.
Last but not least: Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Yes. It would depend on the kind of deal and circumstances etc. But I would certainly consider signing to a label that could boost my profile while allowing me to keep my artistic merit. The pros are in the obvious things like the exposure, marketing and distribution a major record label can bring to the table. The cons would be any loss of creative control and the hectic schedule that comes with being a managed artist. It’s hard to form an opinion on an experience that hasn’t happened to you… yet.
Any last words?
All my supporters in my home town, Adelaide Australia, my family, all the people who helped to make the Art of War project as incredible as it is and the fans that have been there from the very start. There are too many names to mention. You guys know who you are.
