Featured artist: Es - ”Aspire To Inspire”…is the next best move
Below is a short interview with the upcoming underground artist Es.
How did you decide to become an artist?
Es: I was heavily influenced by golden era hiphop. I’ve always had a passion for spreading a positive message through hiphop. This kind of vibe is under-represented in today’s hiphop culture. Through the encouragement of peers and people outside of my immediate circle, I began to take it a bit more seriously. From 2007 onwards I’ve been making music on a more serious level.
The best advice I’ve received is to build relationships with supporters and artists in order to achieve the level of longevity that I desire
What about concerts? Do you play live?
I play live. I try to be out there rocking shows at least once or twice a month
Best punchline you ever wrote?
”…since loose lips sink ships I tried staying afloat / stayed away from the boats, and stick to walking pavements and roads / with a focus on placing thought before my statements and quotes / That’s for fear of taking a blade to the throat…”
What are you currently working on? Did you release something in the past?
I released my debut solo album entitled Feud For Thought back in 2012. I’m currently working on my new album entitled Aspire To Inspire which will come out in July 2014. It is an album, not a mixtape. I put a lot of time, effort and thought into it. I hope the masses take it in and enjoy it. It is an inspirational / motivational, feelgood record with thought provoking messages from a grown man’s perspective, over hard-hitting boombap production.
Last but not least: Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
No. Indie is the way to go. The major label model of the pre-2000’s is no longer what it was. The allure is no more. The internet leveled the playing field making it more cost effective for artists to self produce music without the help of these large corporations. Majors don’t even invest in artists any more until and unless they establish their brand and fan following themselves (independently). If you are able to accomplish this independently, what do you need them for? You’ve done all the work, you deserve 100% of the reward. In 10-15 years, I’ll be surprised if even half of them are still around.
Any last words?
Big shout outs to my crews Gill Breathing, Homegrown and Essenchill Records and all of my Canadian and worldwide connects that hold me down. Big shout out to Mississauga (suburb of Toronto), Ontario, Canada. The city I reside in.
