Upcoming underground artist Syce Lee just answered some questions. Checkout the interview below and share if you like it.
Thanks for your time. How did you decide to become an artist?
Syce Lee: Honestly, music chose me. I’ve been surrounded by music and creativity my whole life. My parents were free spirits and very musically inclined. There was always a piano in the house. Multiple guitars and drums. And no shortage of aunts, uncles and my parents friends that just loved to throw parties and jam out. It was a weekly thing. So naturally, constantly being immersed in this atmosphere, the next step for me was to join in. My parents were fans of music in general. We would listen to everything from Blues and classic rock to classical and heavy metal. It was a grab bag of different sounds. I had a lot of influence. But growing up in the dawn of the age of hip hop that’s what I gravitated towards. It was new and fresh. Plus the older people hated it! Which gave it a certain appeal. Like the sweetest taboo. But I saw the potential in it. Thanks to my brothers like Good Guap, C.O., MI, and some others that would be with me on the corner spitting for hours, I knew it was something special. I’ve been doing this for some years but never took it seriously as a career move until recently. And I’ve got to give credit for that decision to my team TruLuv Entertainment and the tremendous amount of talent that resides there. Quick shout out to Stretch, Bomber tha Monster, Rell Banga, Puchi Baby, Suav A, and last but not least, Tommy Tru. More than just music. By family for real. ”If it’s real, it’s TruLuv.”
What about concerts? Do you play live?
Every chance I get! That stage is where I feel most comfortable. The nervous feeling before a performance and the exhilarating feeling during and after makes me want to do it all over again as soon as I’m done. I’ve been in front of crowds of 5 up to crowds of 5,000 and is always the same. Afterwards I’m glad I did it and is another step on the road to becoming a veteran. My family tries to do at least a show a week even if it means we have to travel. I say my fam cause its not always MY show or performance but I’m always in the building for support. It’s about showing a unified front. If you don’t support your movement then how can you expect anyone else to? Beside the fact that every artist in TLE is extremely talented and put on a great live show. I’m just happy to be a part of it. Live music is where it’s at!
Best punchline you ever wrote?
More of a quote… ”I don’t know where I’m gonna land, but I know I gotta fly/ I don’t know if they’ll understand, but I know I gotta try/” Definitely one of my most quotable lines. Powerful for real. I got it tatted on my arm.
What are you currently working on? Did you release something in the past?
Past projects are out there. First official mixtape release ”Powerful Muzik” is available on multiple sites and there’s so much in the works I don’t even know where to start! My family is on the move with the music. Bomber just dropped an EP called ”The White Light”. I’m on there. Set to be released also are EP’s and mixtapes from Rell, Stretch and Suav that I will also bless. My big brother in music Drawzilla, who taught me so much about who I am as an artist was cool enough to place me on his upcoming release ”The Zenith”, which is gonna be major! Truly a good look and I’m humbled and grateful to be a part of it. And of course my new project ”Powerful Muzik II: The Essence” which started as an EP but the music was just flowing so fast that it turned into a full length project. In the meantime enjoy all the new visuals we’re dropping! Just released a new video Syce Lee – #Workin and recently shot 2 other joints that will be ready for release in month. We’re #workin for real over here!
Last but not least: Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Over the years I’ve learned that this is a shady business. It’s not so much about the music as it is the profit of the allure if the culture. I don’t need to be famous. Music is my passion. If I can feed my family by doing what I love than I can die happy. I don’t have to be a Jay-Z or Rick Ross to feel accomplished. If I can use a major label as a stepping stone to be where I want without feeling like I’ve compromised my integrity then I’m not opposed to it. But I’ve seen many of my favorite artists do what I want to do independently so I guess is more about what opportunities present themselves. I’m open to whatever at this point.
